Choosing the Right Sunscreen: Simple Tips to Protect Your Skin This Summer
As the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outdoors, protecting our skin becomes more important than ever. Whether you’re enjoying a holiday abroad, relaxing in the park, or simply walking to work in the sunshine, sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to look after your skin and reduce long-term sun damage.
But with so many different products lining the shelves, choosing the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming. SPF numbers, UVA ratings, sprays, lotions, mineral formulas — it’s no surprise that one of the most common questions we hear at DMB Chemist and Tower Pharmacy is “Which sunscreen should I actually use?”
The good news is that choosing the right sunscreen doesn’t need to be complicated. Understanding a few simple basics can help you protect your skin properly all summer long.
Why Sunscreen Matters
Sunscreen helps protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays produced by the sun. There are two main types of UV rays that affect the skin:
UVA rays, which contribute to premature ageing, pigmentation, and long-term skin damage
UVB rays, which are mainly responsible for sunburn
Overexposure to UV radiation increases the risk of skin damage and skin cancer, even on cloudy days. That’s why daily sun protection is so important — not just when you’re on holiday.
Using sunscreen regularly can help:
Prevent sunburn
Reduce premature skin ageing
Protect against pigmentation and sun spots
Lower the risk of long-term skin damage
What SPF Should You Choose?
When choosing sunscreen, one of the most important things to look for is broad-spectrum protection with at least SPF 30. Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, helping provide more complete protection for your skin. SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays, making it a strong everyday option for most people. If you’re spending extended time outdoors, travelling somewhere hot, or have very fair skin, you may prefer SPF 50 for additional protection.
Choosing Sunscreen for Your Skin Type
Not all sunscreens feel the same, and finding one that suits your skin type makes it much more likely you’ll use it consistently.
Sensitive Skin
If your skin reacts easily or becomes irritated by skincare products, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often a gentler option. These sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it, and can feel less irritating for sensitive skin types.
Oily or Acne-Prone Skin
For oily or breakout-prone skin, lighter formulas labelled oil-free or non-comedogenic can feel more comfortable and help avoid clogged pores. Gel or fluid sunscreens are often popular choices for everyday use.
Dry Skin
Dry skin usually benefits from cream or lotion-based sunscreens with added hydration. These help protect the skin barrier while keeping your skin moisturised throughout the day.
Don’t Forget Water Resistance
If you’re swimming, exercising, travelling abroad, or spending long periods outdoors, choosing a water-resistant sunscreen is important. Even then, sunscreen should still be reapplied regularly — especially after swimming or sweating.
A common mistake people make is applying sunscreen once and assuming it will last all day. In reality, sunscreen should generally be reapplied every two hours for effective protection.
Simple Sun Safety Habits
Good sun protection goes beyond sunscreen alone. A few simple habits can make a big difference:
Apply sunscreen generously before going outside
Reapply every two hours
Don’t forget areas like ears, neck, hands, and feet
Check expiry dates on older bottles
Wear sunglasses and seek shade during the hottest part of the day, where possible
Consistency is key. The best sunscreen is always the one you’ll actually use every day.
