Starting University This Autumn? Don't Miss Your Free NHS MenB Vaccine

Starting university is an exciting milestone. Between exam results, finding accommodation, organising student finance, and packing for a new adventure, there’s plenty to think about before term begins. One important item that often gets overlooked is your health.

If you're in Year 13 or under 25 and starting university or residential further education for the first time, you may now be eligible for a free NHS MenB vaccine. It's a simple step that can help protect you against a rare but potentially life-threatening illness before you begin this exciting new chapter. At DMB Chemist & Tower Pharmacy, we're encouraging eligible students and parents to check whether they qualify and book their vaccinations as early as possible.

What Is MenB?

Meningococcal group B (MenB) is a strain of bacteria that can cause meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Although these infections are uncommon, they can develop rapidly and become extremely serious within hours. Early symptoms can often resemble flu, making it difficult to recognise at first. Prompt treatment is essential, which is why vaccination remains one of the best ways to protect yourself.

Why Are University Students at Higher Risk?

Starting university brings lots of exciting opportunities, but it also means spending more time in close contact with other people. Living in halls of residence, attending lectures, sharing kitchens, socialising during Freshers' Week, and meeting hundreds of new people all increase the chances of bacteria spreading.

The new NHS vaccination programme has been introduced to help protect young adults during this higher-risk period, before they begin university or residential further education.

I've Already Had the School Meningitis Vaccine – Do I Still Need MenB?

In many cases, yes.

Many students will already have received the MenACWY vaccine during secondary school, usually in Year 9 or Year 10. This vaccine provides important protection against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. However, it does not protect against MenB. The MenB vaccine provides protection against a different strain of meningococcal bacteria, so even if you've had your school meningitis vaccine, you may still be eligible and recommended to receive the MenB vaccine.

Who Is Eligible for the Free NHS MenB Vaccine?

Between 20 July 2026 and 31 March 2027, the NHS is offering the MenB vaccine free of charge to eligible young adults. You should check your eligibility if you are:

  • A Year 13 student (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008)

  • Under 25 and starting university for the first time

  • Under 25 and entering residential further education accommodation for the first time

  • An international student under 25 starting their first year at a UK university

The vaccine requires two doses to provide full protection, so it's important to book early to allow enough time before the start of term.

A Reminder for Parents

If you're the parent of a teenager preparing for university, it's easy for vaccinations to slip down the priority list amongst everything else that needs organising. Taking a few minutes to check their vaccination status now could help protect them during one of the biggest transitions of their life. Alongside the MenB vaccine, it's also worth checking that they're up to date with MenACWY, MMR, and any other routine vaccinations before leaving home.

Book Early for the Best Protection

Eligible patients will receive information through the NHS App, text message, email, or letter when booking becomes available. Don't wait until Freshers' Week to think about vaccination. Because two doses are needed, booking early helps ensure you're fully protected before university begins.
